Kirk Cameron Can Smell the History

Kirk Cameron is worried about the state of our nation and has decided to help us find our way again. Unlike other conservative Christian talking heads, he has decided to step back into our history and set off on a “journey to retrace the footsteps of our forefathers to see if they left us some kind of a map that would guide us back to the foundation of America’s success.”

You can watch him traipse about the past in his new movie, Monumental. It’s the National Treasure view of Christian-flavored American history. You can check out more at the official website or just watch the trailer:

While we could go on and on about the perversion, distortion, and ignorance of history displayed by such movies, we won’t. It doesn’t help anyway, because those of us who disagree with their perspective are accused of those very same things. Instead of an academic standoff, we’d like to offer another thought. This one from Chris Roberts’ wonderful history of nursery rhymes, Heavy Words Lightly Thrown. In his chapter on the three blind mice he sums up American religious culture saying

Waves of religious migrants left Britain (and elsewhere in Europe)  to settle in the Americas in order to practice their religion in peace. Practice, of course, makes perfect, and the United States is now home to some of the most fanatical Christians on the planet. (p. 39)

We wonder if Kirk will discover that ignorance and misleading fanaticism are some of the things dragging America down? We know he won’t. Instead, he’ll spend the whole film with that dopey “really??!!” expression on his face, making it appear as though historians have been hiding the real history all this time.

Let’s Return To the Political Civility Of Our Founders
